Educational Outreach
Since 2017 Claire has been running workshops and masterclasses at schools and colleges across the country covering topics ranging from the Norman Conquest to the English Reformation. She also offers subject specific Continuing Professional Development events and programmes for teachers. Claire is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Historical Association’s Higher Education Committee.
Claire wants to create meaningful interactions between secondary and tertiary education which place teachers and students at the centre of her work. Each of Claire’s workshops, masterclasses and training events are developed following extensive discussions and collaborative work with educational specialists and practitioners. Claire’s work is responsive to what teachers want for their students and for their own continuing professional development.
“Claire makes complex history immensely fascinating and provides very useful sources to help in the teaching of it! Thank you very much. The activities/ideas given are both accessible and enjoyable.”
— Attendee, 'Teaching the Anglo-Saxons and Normans at KS4' CPD Event (2020).
“Claire was so well organised, and has been such a pleasure to work with. From the moment she stepped into our school to deliver a workshop the students were fully engaged. It is really rare for a guest speaker to have such good presence, and to pitch their presentation at the right level, but Claire seemed to do both with ease. The use of contemporary resources and challenging questioning has really pushed on their historical understanding.”
— History Teacher, Turing House School, Teddington.
“Claire’s enthusiasm and passion for the subject shone through, and was infectious around the classroom, enthralling the audience. Claire was a wonderful speaker who had the ability to portray content and ideas in an accessible and clear manner.”
— Teaching Assistant, Cambourne Village College, Cambridge.
During her time with the Citizens Project at Royal Holloway, University of London, Claire developed a range of participatory programmes for school learners across Key Stages 3-5 (aged 11-18). These included themed study days, interactive workshops and the opportunity to co-create an educational YouTube video which helped students to solve a historical problem. Some examples of her work can be viewed below.
If you would like Claire to come and run an event at your school, please get in touch. She offers workshops and training in all aspects of British Medieval History and will develop a bespoke session to suit your requirements.
